Bengaluru: The death of a 13-year-old Class 6 student at a residential school in Bengaluru has sparked a police investigation, with authorities examining allegations of assault by a physical education (PE) teacher while awaiting the final histopathology report to determine the exact cause of death.

The deceased, Gurukiran R, was a student of Sterling English Residential School in Kadayarappanahalli and a resident of Yelahanka. He died on Wednesday morning.

Preliminary findings point to possible heart-related issue

According to police, the preliminary medical opinion suggests the boy may have suffered a heart-related medical emergency. Investigators said Gurukiran had also been suffering from loose motions, and running on the school grounds on Wednesday morning may have triggered the fatal incident.

However, officials emphasised that the exact cause of death will be confirmed only after the histopathology report is received.

Parents accuse school staff of assault

The boy’s parents have alleged that he died after being assaulted by the school’s PE teacher. Their complaint is based on statements reportedly made by the victim’s classmates during questioning.

Police said some students claimed Gurukiran was allegedly beaten by the PE teacher two days before his death. His relatives further alleged that he was struck with a rod, including on his neck, and was then forced to run on the school grounds despite his condition.

Based on a complaint lodged by the victim’s father, Bagalur Police have registered a murder case against the PE teacher, Narayana, along with the owner of Sterling English Residential School and members of the school administration.

Investigation continues

Following the student’s death, grieving relatives entered the school premises, allegedly assaulted the PE teacher and threatened to set him on fire.

Police said the investigation is continuing from all angles, and any further action will depend on the findings of the histopathology report and other evidence collected during the probe.
