Bengaluru: Bengaluru police discovered the severely decomposed body of Gavin James Young, a 59-year-old British national, in an apartment in Koramangala VII Block on Saturday. Young, a chef who had been residing in the US, is suspected to have died by suicide after an overdose of medication.
Details of the Discovery
Young had rented the apartment through Airbnb from Jagadish, starting July 1. According to reports, he requested Jagadish not to contact him until August 1 due to work commitments involving night shifts. When residents of the building noticed a foul odour emanating from the apartment and informed Jagadish, he attempted to reach Young but was unsuccessful. After forcing entry into the flat, Jagadish discovered Young’s decomposed body and promptly alerted the authorities.
Investigation and Evidence
Police officials have secured Young’s body in a mortuary and are coordinating with the UK embassy to inform his family. A case of suspicious death has been registered. At the scene, law enforcement found syringes and multiple strips of medication, including some that were empty. Young, who was diabetic and on insulin, had additional medications for blood pressure and other health conditions. The presence of numerous pill strips suggests a possible overdose.
The police estimate that Young’s death likely occurred on August 1. An autopsy will confirm the exact time and cause of death. There were no signs of forced entry or a struggle at the scene.
Further Actions
Authorities have located Young’s UK passport and are verifying his visa status. Preliminary information indicates that he may have entered India on a tourist visa in April. The investigation continues as officials work to piece together the circumstances leading to Young’s death.
