Bengaluru: In an unusual turn of events, a broken chair became the catalyst for solving a long-standing issue on Koramangala’s 5th Main, 17th Cross Road. For 20 days, a sinkhole had plagued the road in front of a busy hospital, but it was the sight of the broken chair placed over the hole just 2-3 days ago that led BBMP officials to take immediate action.
Residents and shopkeepers confirmed that the sinkhole, about 4 feet in diameter, had been an ongoing problem. However, it wasn’t until the chair was placed on top of it that BBMP personnel intervened and repaired the sinkhole swiftly. According to the executive engineer of BBMP’s south zone, the sinkhole had formed on a BWSSB manhole. Upon receiving a video of the chair covering the hole, officials took prompt action to address the issue with a wet mix.
The sinkhole had posed a significant danger, particularly due to its location in front of Acura Hospital, where ambulances and pregnant women frequently passed by. Nand Kishor Shaa, a security guard at the hospital, highlighted the recurring nature of the sinkhole, noting that it was dangerous for those navigating the road, especially at night.
Despite the recent fix, local shop owners, including Ajesh, a tea shop owner, and Syed Kasim, an eatery owner, expressed concerns that the repair was only a temporary solution. The sinkhole tends to resurface, especially after rain, and poses a hidden hazard for pedestrians and drivers alike.
