Bengaluru: A Common Entrance Test (CET) aspirant witnessed a remarkable improvement in his Karnataka CET rank after the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) considered his revised CBSE Class 12 marks following revaluation.

The student’s rank surged from 1,94,806 to 49,608, an improvement of more than 1.45 lakh places, making it one of the biggest rank jumps recorded after KEA’s special initiative.

KEA gives CBSE students one-time relief

CET rankings are determined by giving equal weightage to Class 12 marks and CET scores. Initially, KEA had decided not to consider revaluated CBSE marks, in line with its usual practice.

However, following widespread criticism of CBSE’s on-screen evaluation process and repeated requests from students and parents, the authority opened a special window from July 4 to July 6 for candidates to upload their revised marks.

KEA received updated marks from 1,177 students, including 407 CBSE students who had undergone revaluation. Spot ranks were subsequently issued to all eligible candidates.

Thousands benefit from revised scores

According to KEA, several students recorded significant improvements after their revised marks were considered.

Apart from the student whose rank improved by over 1.45 lakh places, five students gained between 20,000 and 50,000 ranks, while 13 others improved by 10,000 to 20,000 places.

One parent said that although their son gained only two additional marks after revaluation, his CET rank improved by 200 places, increasing his chances of securing admission to a better college.

The parent also urged KEA to introduce a normalisation process across different education boards, arguing that CBSE students often compete at a disadvantage compared to Karnataka PU Board students, where higher marks are generally more common.

Student-friendly decision

KEA Executive Director H. Prasanna said the authority initially hesitated to reopen the process because counselling had already begun. However, it decided to provide the special opportunity in the interest of students.

He added that KEA also extended document verification until the final day of option entry, reaffirming the authority’s commitment to a student-friendly and transparent admission process.
