An engineering student from Chennai, V.V. Vaageesan, has approached the Madras High Court with a petition, requesting the cancellation of the Censor Board certificate granted to the Tamil film Amaran. This legal action stems from an incident where Vaageesan’s personal mobile number was shown in one of the film’s scenes, leading to a series of unwanted disruptions.
Vaageesan claims that following the release of the movie on October 31, 2024, he was bombarded with numerous phone calls. The callers mistakenly believed the number belonged to either actress Sai Pallavi, who played the lead female role, or to Indhu Rebecca Varghese, the character she portrayed.
Before filing the petition, Vaageesan had sent a legal notice to the film’s production company, Raajkamal Films International, which is owned by renowned actor Kamal Haasan. The company acknowledged the mistake, offered an apology, and edited the phone number before releasing the film on Netflix on December 5, 2024.
However, Vaageesan continues to pursue legal action, asking the court for an interim injunction to prevent the movie’s release on OTT platforms until the issue is resolved. He is also seeking compensation amounting to Rs 1.1 crore from the filmmakers. Additionally, the petitioner has requested that Bharti Airtel produce the incoming call records for his number from the time of the film’s release.
Amaran, a biographical film about Major Mukund Varadarajan, includes a scene where the female lead shares a phone number with the protagonist, which coincidentally matches Vaageesan’s personal number.
