Officials in Bengaluru successfully stopped a child marriage after receiving information from the minor girl’s boyfriend, authorities said.

According to reports, the Child Welfare Department acted swiftly after the tip-off and visited the girl’s residence on May 7. Officials counselled the family and obtained a written undertaking stating that the marriage would be cancelled.

Authorities said the girl was under the legal age for marriage, making the planned ceremony a violation of child protection laws.

Officials intervene quickly

Child welfare officials reportedly reached the house before the ceremony could take place and explained the legal and social consequences of child marriage to the family members.

The intervention helped prevent the marriage without escalation, officials said.

Authorities are also expected to continue monitoring the situation to ensure the girl’s safety, education, and wellbeing.

Child marriage remains a concern

Despite legal prohibitions, child marriage continues to be reported in parts of India due to factors such as:

  • Economic hardship
  • Social pressure
  • Lack of awareness
  • Traditional practices
  • Concerns over family honour and security

Child rights activists stress that early marriage can negatively affect education, mental health, and long-term opportunities for girls.

Legal provisions

Under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, girls below 18 years and boys below 21 years cannot legally marry in India.

Officials urged citizens to immediately report suspected child marriages to local authorities, child helplines, or police.

Awareness and education important

Child welfare experts emphasise that community awareness, education, and family counselling are crucial in preventing such incidents.

Authorities also praised the timely alert that enabled officials to intervene before the marriage could take place
