The iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium has been officially cleared to host matches for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season, with authorities approving full-capacity operations after a detailed safety review.
Expert panel gives clearance
The approval was granted by Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwar following an inspection by a government-appointed expert committee. The review focused on structural safety, emergency preparedness and crowd management systems at the stadium.
The decision comes months after concerns were raised following a tragic stampede during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s title celebrations on June 4, 2025, which claimed 11 lives.
Key matches scheduled in Bengaluru
As per the IPL 2026 schedule, the season opener will be held at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on March 28, where defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru will face Sunrisers Hyderabad.
The venue will also host a playoff match and the final, continuing the tradition of allowing defending champions to host key fixtures. RCB are set to play five of their seven home matches at the stadium, with the remaining two scheduled in Raipur.
Full capacity with added safety focus
Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) officials confirmed that the stadium has been cleared to operate at full capacity. However, authorities have emphasised stronger public awareness regarding new safety protocols.
Officials said a dedicated campaign will be launched to educate spectators about entry procedures and crowd management systems.
Measures to prevent overcrowding
In response to last year’s stampede, several new measures have been introduced. QR-coded tickets will be implemented to streamline entry and reduce congestion.
Additionally, six new entry gates have been added around the stadium to improve crowd flow. Authorities have also coordinated with Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) to ensure smoother transportation for fans on match days.

With enhanced infrastructure and stricter crowd control measures in place, authorities aim to ensure a safer and more organised experience for spectators during IPL 2026.
