Bengaluru: Karnataka Home Minister Dr. G. Parameshwara has directed that the investigation into the alleged atrocities committed by a police officer in Moodbidri be handed over to the Crime Investigation Department (CID).

Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru on March 23, the minister said he has instructed the State Director General of Police to transfer the case for an independent and detailed probe.

Allegations against police inspector

The case pertains to allegations against Police Inspector Sandesh of Moodbidri, who has been accused of committing atrocities against women. While details of the alleged incidents are still emerging, the accusations have raised serious concerns over police conduct and accountability.

The decision to hand over the investigation to the CID is aimed at ensuring a fair and impartial inquiry, given the sensitivity of the allegations and the involvement of a serving police officer.

Women’s Commission steps in

The Karnataka State Women’s Commission has also taken cognisance of the issue. Chairperson Nagalakshmi Chaudhary recently met the victim and gathered information related to the incident.

According to the Home Minister, the commission shared several important aspects of the case with the government, prompting the decision to escalate the probe to a higher investigative agency.

“The Women’s Commission has provided details on multiple issues related to the case. Based on this, instructions have been given to transfer the investigation to the CID,” Parameshwara said.

CID probe to ensure impartiality

The Crime Investigation Department (CID) is expected to take over the case in the coming days and begin a comprehensive inquiry. Officials indicated that the probe would examine all aspects of the allegations, including the conduct of the accused officer and any possible lapses in procedure.

A CID investigation is generally considered more independent compared to local police inquiries, particularly in cases involving police personnel. The move is intended to instil public confidence and ensure transparency in the investigation process.

Growing scrutiny on police conduct

The incident has once again brought attention to issues of police accountability and the treatment of vulnerable individuals, especially women. Civil society groups and activists have often called for stricter oversight mechanisms and swift action in cases involving misconduct by law enforcement officials.

The government’s decision to involve the CID is being seen as a step towards addressing such concerns and ensuring justice for the victims.

Conclusion

The transfer of the Moodbidri police atrocity case to the CID marks a significant development in the case, reflecting the government’s intent to conduct a thorough and unbiased investigation. As the probe progresses, attention will remain on ensuring accountability and safeguarding the rights of those affected.
