In a significant push to improve pedestrian safety and urban mobility, the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has proposed the construction of 101 skywalks at major traffic junctions across the city as part of a comprehensive traffic management strategy.

The initiative also includes the relocation of 103 bus stops that were previously placed without adequate planning, a move aimed at improving public transport access while reducing congestion on major roads.

Skywalks planned to improve pedestrian safety

Officials said the skywalks are intended to provide safer road crossings at busy intersections where heavy traffic often makes it difficult for pedestrians to cross.

By separating pedestrian movement from vehicular traffic, authorities expect the plan to significantly reduce accident risks and improve traffic flow.

The relocation of poorly positioned bus stops is also expected to streamline the interface between buses and other vehicles, preventing traffic bottlenecks that frequently occur near bus bays.

Monsoon preparation targets waterlogging spots

As part of preparations ahead of the monsoon, the authority has identified 137 locations prone to severe water stagnation during heavy rains.

Infrastructure repair and drainage improvements have been planned at these sites to prevent flooding and traffic disruption during the rainy season.

GBA Chief Commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao said the proposed works will be incorporated into the authority’s upcoming budget.

“We are creating the necessary provisions to execute these projects. Waterlogging is a major concern at many locations across the city, and we are addressing it through targeted infrastructure work,” he said.

In areas such as Yelahanka and Sindhoor Choultry, authorities are deploying advanced pipe-pushing technology to speed up drainage construction.

Officials expect visible progress on these works by June, before the peak monsoon period.

Reward announced to curb garbage burning

The authority has also announced a reward and penalty mechanism to tackle environmental violations, particularly the burning of garbage.

Under the new initiative, citizens who report instances of garbage burning will receive a reward of ₹250.

Officials said the measure is aimed at encouraging public participation in keeping the city clean while discouraging harmful waste disposal practices.

Authorities also warned that strict action will be taken if civic staff themselves are found violating environmental rules.

The combined measures are expected to improve traffic management, pedestrian safety, drainage infrastructure and environmental monitoring, signalling a broader effort to enhance the quality of urban life in Bengaluru.
