Bengaluru: Brief fluctuations in website traffic on August 4 prompted concerns among website operators after they coincided with updates on Cloudflare‘s status page. However, the cloud services provider has clarified that there was no global outage, and its services remained operational throughout the day.
Cloudflare confirmed that it was carrying out scheduled maintenance at its IAD (Ashburn) data centre in the United States while an earlier network performance issue affecting its Bengaluru data centre had already been resolved before the maintenance began.
Planned maintenance, not a service outage
According to Cloudflare’s official status page, scheduled maintenance at the Ashburn data centre began at 10:00 UTC on August 4 and was expected to continue until 06:00 UTC on August 5.
During the maintenance window, customer traffic could be temporarily routed through nearby data centres, potentially causing slight increases in network latency. However, the company said widespread service disruption was not expected, with global services remaining operational.
Bengaluru issue resolved
Earlier on August 4, Cloudflare reported a network performance issue affecting its Bengaluru data centre. The company said engineers resolved the problem at 6:32 am IST, restoring normal network performance.
Cloudflare’s status page later showed Bengaluru as fully operational, although Kolkata continued to display a “partially rerouted” status, indicating that some traffic was being directed through alternate network paths as part of normal network management.
Temporary traffic fluctuations observed
Some website operators reported a noticeable drop in Google Analytics real-time visitors lasting around 30 minutes before traffic returned to expected levels.
Experts noted that scheduled traffic rerouting, minor increases in latency, delays in analytics reporting and normal fluctuations in visitor activity can all influence real-time analytics without indicating a website outage.
Cloudflare has not linked these temporary traffic changes to its scheduled maintenance or the earlier Bengaluru network issue.
Businesses closely monitor Cloudflare updates
As one of the world’s largest content delivery and internet infrastructure providers, Cloudflare supports millions of websites, applications and APIs globally. Even routine maintenance updates are closely watched by businesses, publishers and developers because network changes can affect performance-sensitive services.
Cloudflare’s latest updates emphasise that the Ashburn maintenance was planned, the Bengaluru issue had already been resolved, and no widespread service disruption or global outage occurred.
