Bengaluru: A stand-up comedy show by Sarat Uday Boddeda in Bengaluru was disrupted on Saturday evening after a group of individuals, allegedly supporters of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), demanded an apology over jokes made two years ago about Andhra Pradesh leaders.
The incident occurred at a comedy venue in Koramangala on April 25 and has since sparked debate over freedom of expression and rising tensions around political satire.
Disruption during live performance
Sarat, a Hyderabad-based comedian, was performing his solo show when a man from the audience reportedly walked onto the stage and interrupted him. Shortly after, several others joined him, claiming to be part of a group of around 10 individuals.
According to videos circulating online, the group insisted that the comedian apologise for remarks made earlier about Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and his son, Minister Nara Lokesh.
Despite Sarat stating that he had already apologised for the jokes two years ago, the group continued to press for another apology during the live show.
Apology issued under pressure
Faced with repeated demands and disruption, Sarat eventually issued an apology during the performance. However, the individuals continued to warn him against making similar jokes in the future and reportedly used abusive language during the confrontation.
At one point, they allegedly asked the comedian to chant political slogans in support of the party and its leaders, which he refused. Sarat then asked them to leave the venue after complying with their demand for an apology.
When the group questioned whether their ticket money would be refunded, Sarat agreed to return it. The individuals reportedly left after further arguments, during which chairs were also kicked in apparent frustration.
Background to the controversy
The issue stems from a video uploaded by Sarat in December 2024 titled “Andhra Politics,” which included satirical commentary on multiple political parties, including the TDP, the YSR Congress Party, and the Jana Sena Party.
Following backlash at the time, Sarat had issued a public apology and stated that he would refrain from making jokes about Andhra Pradesh politicians in the future.
Renewed tensions after recent arrests
The controversy resurfaced amid heightened sensitivity following the arrest of comedians Anudeep Katikala and Rafiq by Andhra Pradesh police over jokes involving actor and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan.
According to Sarat, supporters of political parties revisited his old content after these incidents and began targeting him again. He alleged that he received threats and that details of his shows were circulated online, calling for action against him.
Concerns over free speech
The incident has raised concerns within the comedy and artistic community about freedom of expression and the safety of performers. Interruptions of live shows and demands for public apologies have triggered debate over the limits of satire and political criticism.
Observers note that such disruptions may have a chilling effect on comedians and artists who rely on social and political commentary as part of their work.
Conclusion
The disruption of Sarat Uday’s show highlights growing friction between political sensitivities and artistic expression. While the comedian complied with demands to defuse the situation, the episode underscores the challenges faced by performers navigating satire in an increasingly polarised environment.
