In response to the devastating stampede at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, which resulted in 11 deaths, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has initiated steps to ensure safer public events going forward. During its 28th Apex Council Meeting on June 14, the board announced the formation of a three-member committee to draft standard guidelines for post-match and victory celebrations.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia has been appointed committee chair, alongside members Prabhtej Singh Bhatia and Rajeev Shukla, a senior board official. The panel has been directed to submit its recommendations within 15 days.
The tragic incident occurred during celebrations of Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s historic IPL title win — their first in 18 years. A sudden crowd surge at the stadium gates led to the stampede, raising serious alarms about event security and crowd regulation.
In a statement, the Apex Council extended its deep condolences to the victims’ families and stressed the urgency of reforming crowd management protocols. The proposed guidelines will focus on crowd control strategies, stadium entry-exit coordination, capacity capping, and better collaboration with local authorities and emergency responders.
The move, while supported by many as necessary for public safety, has also sparked debate on whether such measures could have been anticipated earlier.
