A shocking theft at a residence in Jakkasandra has raised fresh concerns over domestic worker verification in the city after a cook allegedly fled with gold jewellery and cash worth over ₹23 lakh within just ten days of being hired.
The incident occurred while the Paruthi family had stepped out for dinner on March 1, leaving the domestic worker alone at home.
Domestic help joined through recommendation
According to the complaint, businessman Meesha Paruthi had recently hired the woman, identified as Saroj, after being referred by a former cook who had previously worked for the family.
Paruthi had been searching for live-in help as his wife was unwell and required assistance with daily household chores.
Saroj, reportedly from Bihar, was described as skilled and reliable. For about ten days, she managed the kitchen and handled domestic tasks, gradually becoming a trusted presence in the household.
However, the situation took a dramatic turn within days of her employment.
Theft occurred during three-hour window
Police said the alleged theft took place on March 1 between 6.30 pm and 9.30 pm, when the family had gone out for dinner.
When they returned home, the domestic worker had disappeared. The house appeared ransacked, with bedroom doors open and cupboards searched.
Investigations revealed that the suspect had located the locker key kept in a drawer near the bed and used it to access valuables stored inside.
The stolen items reportedly included diamond-studded gold bracelets, gold bangles, diamond earrings, rings with precious stones including yellow sapphire, along with ₹3 lakh in cash.
In total, nearly 80 grams of gold jewellery worth around ₹20 lakh was taken from the house.
Police register case and launch search
A case has been registered at the Koramangala Police Station under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to theft by a servant.
Police suspect the accused may have fled towards her native place in Bihar, and efforts are under way to trace her movements.
Authorities are examining possible travel routes and checking available leads to locate the suspect.
Police urge verification of domestic workers
Following the incident, police have issued a reminder to Bengaluru residents about the importance of police verification before hiring domestic workers.
Officials warned that employing individuals without proper background checks can pose serious security risks.
Investigators said the case serves as a cautionary example for urban households, highlighting the need for verification procedures to ensure safety and prevent similar incidents.
