Bengaluru: A 22-year-old man has alleged that he and his female friend were harassed by a conductor on a private sleeper bus that departed from Bengaluru, after the duo booked three lower sleeper berths to ensure additional space and comfort during their journey.

The passenger shared his experience on the Reddit forum r/bangalore, describing the incident as an instance of “moral policing”. The post has since sparked debate online regarding passenger rights and conduct standards on private bus services.

Three berths booked for comfort

According to the Reddit user, the two adults had booked three lower sleeper berths in a 2×1 AC sleeper configuration. The arrangement was reportedly chosen so that they would have extra space and allow one person to sleep comfortably.

In his post, the passenger wrote that the conductor noticed the arrangement and asked them to sit separately despite their valid tickets.

“Two of us (both adults) booked 3 lower sleeper berths in a 2×1 AC sleeper so we’d have extra space and one person could sleep comfortably. The conductor noticed and first asked us to sit separately,” the user stated.

He further alleged that when they did not immediately comply, the conductor escalated the matter by making remarks such as “call your parents” and “we’ll go to police,” which he described as intimidating and unnecessary.

Allegation of intimidation

The passenger maintained that they were not causing any disturbance and were travelling with confirmed tickets for the berths in question.

“We eventually agreed just to avoid drama, but it left a pretty bad taste. We had valid tickets and weren’t causing any disturbance. It felt more like moral policing than any actual rule,” he wrote in the post.

The incident reportedly occurred during a journey on a private sleeper bus departing from Bengaluru. The name of the bus operator was not mentioned in the post.

There has been no official response from the bus operator or transport authorities regarding the allegation so far.

Mixed reactions online

The post generated varied reactions from Reddit users. Some suggested that the conductor may have intended to resell the allegedly unused berth to another passenger for personal gain.

One user commented that since the passengers had purchased the seats, the conductor had no authority to object, and encouraged them to question the basis for such instructions.

Another user described the episode as possibly an isolated incident, suggesting that the objection may have been linked to attempts to monetise an empty berth.

A third user opined that stronger action should have been taken against what they termed inappropriate conduct by the staff member.

Questions on passenger rights

The episode has raised broader questions regarding passenger rights and policies governing berth usage on private sleeper buses. Transport experts note that if passengers have valid tickets for booked berths, staff generally cannot reassign or restrict usage without a specific rule or safety concern.

However, private bus operators may have internal policies regarding occupancy patterns, especially in sleeper coaches, though such policies must be clearly communicated and applied uniformly.

The incident also highlights ongoing discussions around personal freedoms and privacy for adult passengers travelling together.

Need for clarity and accountability

While the allegations remain based on a social media account and have not been independently verified, they underscore the need for clear guidelines and grievance redressal mechanisms in private transport services.

Transport authorities in Karnataka have previously emphasised the importance of professional conduct by staff and adherence to passenger rights.

In the absence of an official complaint, it remains unclear whether any inquiry will be initiated. However, the online discussion indicates growing awareness among passengers about their rights and expectations of respectful treatment during travel.
