Bengaluru: A couple injured in a mysterious explosion at their home in Alur taluk of Hassan district succumbed to burn injuries at Victoria Hospital, Bengaluru.
The incident in Hassan
Bengaluru, Oct 1: Tragedy struck in Hassan district when a couple, Sudarshan (32) and Kavya (28), who had sustained severe burn injuries in a blast at their house in Alur taluk, lost their lives while undergoing treatment in Bengaluru. The explosion occurred late on Monday evening, raising suspicions about its cause, and police are still investigating the matter.
According to the police, the blast took place near the washroom area of the house when Sudarshan and Kavya were present there. Initial suspicion pointed towards a possible gas cylinder explosion, but authorities have not confirmed this yet. The couple, who were in critical condition, were first treated in Hassan before being shifted to Victoria Hospital in Bengaluru, where they succumbed late Tuesday night.
Eyewitness account
The complaint was filed by Mohan Kumar, Sudarshan’s father, who was also present in the house at the time of the incident. In his statement to Alur police, Kumar said that at around 8.30 pm on Monday, he, his son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren were inside the house when they suddenly heard a loud blast.
The explosion was so strong that it caused chaos in the house. While Sudarshan and Kavya, who were in the passage area near the washroom, suffered critical injuries, Kumar and his grandchildren, who were in the lobby, escaped without harm. Kumar’s statement has been recorded as part of the ongoing investigation.
Police investigation underway
Senior police officials stated that the exact cause of the explosion is yet to be ascertained. “As per the investigation done so far, Sudarshan and Kavya were working on something in the passage area of the house which led to the blast. However, it is not clear whether it was caused by a gas cylinder or some other item,” said a senior officer.
The local police registered a case on September 29 and have started technical inspections of the house to determine what triggered the explosion. Forensic experts are also likely to be involved in examining the remnants from the blast site.
Community in shock
The sudden and tragic death of the young couple has left the residents of Alur taluk shocked. Neighbours and relatives gathered at the family’s home, offering support to Mohan Kumar and his grandchildren, who survived the incident. Locals have urged authorities to speed up the probe and clarify whether the blast was accidental or caused by faulty equipment.
Many in the area initially feared that it was a cylinder blast, as such incidents have been reported in the region in the past. However, the absence of conclusive evidence has left the community anxious and waiting for answers.
Broader concerns about safety
The incident has once again raised questions about safety measures in households, especially in semi-urban and rural areas where many families continue to rely on traditional cooking gas systems without modern safety equipment. Authorities have repeatedly advised residents to conduct routine checks on LPG cylinders, pipes, and stoves to prevent accidents.
Experts note that in several recent cases across Karnataka, blasts initially attributed to gas leaks turned out to have other causes, including faulty electrical wiring or storage of combustible materials. This underlines the importance of thorough investigations and preventive awareness campaigns.
Conclusion
The deaths of Sudarshan and Kavya highlight the devastating consequences of such unexplained explosions. While the investigation is ongoing, their family and the wider community await clarity on the exact cause of the blast. Authorities have assured that all angles will be examined to establish responsibility and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
