The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has issued a stern warning to ILC Iron and Steel Pvt Ltd, located just 2 km from the Tungabhadra backwaters, for multiple violations of environmental regulations.
As one of the 17 high-pollution industries identified by the government, the unit is subject to stringent compliance norms under both state (KSPCB) and central pollution control authorities. During an inspection conducted on May 22, the CPCB found critical lapses, particularly in the emission standards of the Waste Heat Recovery Boiler (WHRB).
According to the CPCB, particulate matter (PM) levels from the WHRB stack measured 102 mg/m³, exceeding the KSPCB’s limit of 50 mg/m³ and just breaching the national standard of 100 mg/m³ under the Environment Protection Rules, 1986. The unit also failed to update real-time emissions data on the designated online portal.
Other violations included:
-
No manual sampling access point on the stack.
Coal and iron ore pellets stored in the open, raising environmental and health concerns.
Lack of proper environmental display boards as mandated.
The CPCB has given the company until June 27 to fix these issues. Failing that, action under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 will be initiated.
