In a push to reclaim pedestrian spaces and improve urban mobility, the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has directed strict action against encroachments along Old Madras Road, signalling renewed focus on public infrastructure and accessibility.

GBA Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao issued the instructions during an inspection stretch from Swami Vivekananda Metro Station to Ulsoor Lake under the Bengaluru Central City Corporation limits.

Strict action against encroachments

Officials have been instructed to identify and clear encroachments on footpaths, impose fines on violators, and ensure unobstructed pedestrian movement. Encroachments were reportedly observed near key areas, including a nursery, a granite shop, and stretches along Murphy Road.

Authorities also flagged waste dumping near a damaged compound wall of the MEG premises, highlighting the need for immediate corrective measures.

Focus on pedestrian-friendly infrastructure

The commissioner emphasised the need for clean, safe, and accessible walkways. Teams have been directed to undertake mass cleaning drives and repair damaged slabs and kerb stones along footpaths to ensure smoother movement for pedestrians.

The initiative aims to enhance walkability in busy urban corridors while prioritising safety and convenience for daily commuters.

Development work at Ulsoor Lake progresses

Bengaluru Central City Corporation Commissioner Rajendra Cholan also reviewed ongoing works at Ulsoor Lake. Spread across 106 acres, the lake is undergoing comprehensive development at a cost of Rs 33.50 crore.

Officials stated that the project is expected to be completed before the monsoon. The construction of a connecting bridge between the adjoining park and the lake is also nearing completion.

Information boards will be installed to keep the public informed about the progress of development works.

Civic push for cleaner, safer city

The inspection underscores the administration’s broader efforts to address urban challenges such as encroachment, waste management, and pedestrian safety. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to ensuring that public spaces remain accessible and well-maintained.
