BENGALURU: Crackers continue to take a toll on eyesight this festive season, with both adults and children suffering severe burns and vision damage across the city.

Narayana Nethralaya reported 93 eye injury cases in just three days, ranging from mild corneal abrasions to severe corneal tears, epithelial defects, and lens dislocation. Most of the victims were children and adult men, doctors said.

At Minto Ophthalmic Hospital, 37 cracker-related cases were reported, including 14 grievous injuries. Of these, 17 victims injured themselves while lighting fireworks, while 20 were bystanders caught in the blast. One patient with extensive facial burns was also admitted to Victoria Hospital’s burns ward.

Hospital authorities said high-density crackers such as atom bombs, bijili crackers, bijili rolls, and flower pots were responsible for most of the injuries.

Doctors urged the public to avoid unsafe, high-intensity fireworks and ensure protective eyewear is used during celebrations.
