Ramanagara (Karnataka), June 20 – Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has confirmed the renaming of Ramanagara district to Bengaluru South. This decision has sparked criticism from BJP and JD-S, but Shivakumar remains firm, emphasizing the significance of preserving Bengaluru’s identity.

Addressing a government employees’ conference in Channapatna on Friday, Shivakumar stated, “Bengaluru is our identity and pride. We must not lose it. Therefore, despite opposition, I will rename Ramanagara to Bengaluru South.” He clarified that the district’s administrative center, Channapatna, along with Ramanagara, Kanakapura, Magadi, and Harohalli, will be included in the new Bengaluru South district.

Shivakumar highlighted his long-standing attachment to Bengaluru, recalling his tenure with the Zilla Parishad, which was previously known as Bengaluru Rural District Parishad. He argued that preserving Bengaluru’s name is crucial, likening it to how H.D. Deve Gowda retains his hometown’s name.

Addressing accusations of renaming for real estate gains, Shivakumar dismissed such claims, stressing his commitment to local development and property value enhancement. He pointed out that land values have surged significantly, citing Devanahalli’s transformation as an example.

On other matters, Shivakumar mentioned the formation of a committee to review the implementation of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) and health issues. He assured that the committee would study OPS practices in other states and provide a comprehensive report.
