Police are searching for a food-delivery agent accused of marrying a minor girl who is now five months pregnant, in a case that has raised serious concerns over child protection and legal awareness.
The accused, identified as Nataraj, a resident of Sadaramangala–Kadugodi area, is currently absconding. His mobile phone has been switched off, police said.
Case registered under POCSO
Based on a complaint filed by Tilakesh Kumar K, legal officer of the District Child Protection Unit, the Kadugodi Police Station has registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, and the Child Marriage Prohibition Act.
Police have also booked the minor girl’s mother and the accused’s parents for their alleged role in facilitating the marriage.
Relationship led to illegal marriage
Investigators revealed that Nataraj, originally from Tamil Nadu, had known the girl’s family for a long time. The girl, a school dropout, was reportedly in a relationship with him.
After the relationship came to light, both families allegedly agreed to the marriage without considering the legal implications, officials said.
Complaint exposes violation
The case came to light after another food-delivery agent, who was reportedly interested in marrying the girl, approached the child protection authorities and filed a complaint.
Following verification, officials confirmed that the girl was 17 years and six months old, making the marriage illegal under Indian law.
Search operation underway
Police have launched a search to trace the accused and are continuing investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Authorities have reiterated that child marriage and sexual relations involving minors are punishable offences, urging families to remain aware of legal provisions and prioritise the welfare of children.
