Bengaluru: Senior Congress leader and former Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has indicated that the swearing-in ceremony for Karnataka’s next Chief Minister is likely to take place on June 3. The development comes amid strong indications that Shivakumar will be elected as the new leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) following the resignation of Siddaramaiah as Chief Minister.

Speaking briefly to mediapersons on Saturday before attending the Congress Legislature Party meeting, Shivakumar appeared to confirm the tentative date for the oath-taking ceremony. When asked whether the new Chief Minister would be sworn in on June 3, he responded, “Third, third,” signalling that the ceremony is expected to take place on that day.

Supporters gather ahead of CLP meeting

Ahead of the crucial CLP meeting, supporters gathered in large numbers outside Shivakumar’s residence, reflecting the anticipation surrounding the leadership transition in Karnataka.

Visuals showed the Congress leader leaving for the meeting amid enthusiastic support from party workers and followers. Upon arriving at the Vidhan Soudha, Shivakumar was seen touching the steps of the State Legislature building, a gesture often associated with respect and gratitude before assuming significant responsibilities.

The Congress Legislature Party meeting is expected to formally elect its new leader, paving the way for government formation under the party’s next Chief Minister.

Astrologer suggests auspicious timing

Adding to the speculation surrounding the swearing-in ceremony, astrologer Aaradhya, who met Shivakumar earlier in the day, claimed that he had advised the Congress leader to take the oath of office on June 3 at 5.15 pm.

While political decisions regarding the timing of oath ceremonies are ultimately made by party leadership and constitutional authorities, the astrologer’s remarks attracted attention as preparations for the transition continued.

No official announcement regarding the exact time of the ceremony has yet been made by the Congress party or Raj Bhavan.

Siddaramaiah resigned on high command’s advice

The leadership change follows Siddaramaiah’s resignation as Chief Minister on May 28. Announcing his decision, Siddaramaiah stated that he had stepped down voluntarily following discussions and suggestions from the Congress high command.

The veteran leader emphasised that he would continue to abide by the party’s decisions and support the new leadership.

His resignation marked the end of a significant chapter in Karnataka politics, with Siddaramaiah having overseen the implementation of several welfare programmes and development initiatives during his tenure.

Governor accepts resignation

Following Siddaramaiah’s resignation, Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot accepted his resignation and dissolved the Council of Ministers with immediate effect.

However, the Governor requested Siddaramaiah to continue as Chief Minister until alternative arrangements are made and a new government is formally constituted.

The interim arrangement ensures continuity in governance until the swearing-in of the new Chief Minister and the formation of a fresh Council of Ministers.

New chapter for Karnataka Congress

The anticipated elevation of D. K. Shivakumar marks a major political development for the Congress in Karnataka. If elected as CLP leader and sworn in as Chief Minister, Shivakumar will take charge of the state’s administration at a crucial time as the government prepares to implement key policy initiatives and fulfil electoral promises.

With the CLP meeting underway and indications pointing towards a June 3 swearing-in, Karnataka is poised to witness a significant leadership transition in the coming days.
