Bengaluru: A doctor in Bengaluru has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a Bangladeshi couple after questioning their nationality. The incident occurred in the Bellandur police station limits and has sparked an investigation into both the alleged assault and the couple’s immigration status.

Doctor arrested after complaint

According to police, Dr Nagendra of Sri Sai Clinic in Bettadasapura allegedly assaulted Nasreena Bilal and her husband, Mohammed Bilal, following an argument. During the altercation, he reportedly questioned their citizenship and accused them of being Bangladeshi nationals living illegally in Bengaluru.

Following the incident, Nasreena approached the Bellandur police and lodged a complaint against the doctor.

Based on her complaint, police arrested Dr Nagendra. He was later released on bail the same day.

Doctor cites concern over illegal immigration

Police sources said Dr Nagendra told investigators that he wanted to “teach the couple a lesson” as he believed many illegal immigrants were residing in and around the Whitefield area.

The statement is being examined as part of the ongoing investigation.

Police verifying couple’s documents

Police confirmed that the couple are Bangladeshi nationals and said their immigration status is currently under verification.

“It is true that the couple are from Bangladesh. We are verifying details about them. We’re checking whether they had arrived here illegally or have proper documents,” a police officer said.

Officials have not yet disclosed whether the couple possess valid travel or residential documents. Further action will depend on the outcome of the verification process.

The investigation into the alleged assault as well as the couple’s legal status is continuing.
