Bengaluru is witnessing a steady rise in drunk driving cases, prompting traffic police to intensify enforcement and introduce daily checks across the city.
Sharp rise in violations
During a recent weekend, traffic police conducted checks at nearly 140 locations, screening over 50,000 motorists. As many as 732 cases were registered in just two days, highlighting the scale of violations.
Officials noted that despite strict penalties, offenders continue to drive under the influence, particularly during weekends.
Fines fail to deter offenders
Authorities stated that individuals caught driving under the influence are fined ₹10,000. However, the higher penalty has not significantly reduced violations, with many motorists still taking the risk.
Over 2,000 cases in a month
Traffic police data reveals that more than 2,000 drunk driving cases have been recorded in the past month alone, indicating a growing concern.
Officials warned that such violations are contributing to an increase in road accidents, making it a serious public safety issue in the city.
Daily enforcement to curb trend
In response, the Traffic Wing has decided to step up action. Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Karthik Reddy has directed all units to conduct daily drunk driving checks, instead of limiting enforcement primarily to weekends.
The move aims to ensure continuous monitoring and stricter compliance among motorists.
Focus on road safety
Authorities have urged citizens to avoid driving under the influence and to prioritise safety. The intensified checks are part of broader efforts to reduce accidents and improve road discipline in Bengaluru.
