Bengaluru: A routine drink-and-drive checkpoint in Mahadevapura escalated into violence on Saturday night when a man and his female companion allegedly assaulted a traffic police inspector after their vehicle was confiscated.
The accused, Rakesh Kumar (35) and Baisakhi (30), both bank employees and residents of B Narayanapura, were stopped near Singayyanapalya Metro station by a team led by Inspector Anitha Kumari. A breathalyzer test revealed Rakesh’s blood alcohol level at 133 mg/100 ml, far exceeding the legal limit. As a result, officers seized his bike, instructing him to seek a release order from the court.
Unwilling to comply, Rakesh demanded immediate release of his vehicle, while Baisakhi verbally abused the inspector for nearly half an hour. The situation escalated when she struck Anitha Kumari on the right hand and attempted to kick her, forcing the officer to push her away in self-defense.
Following the assault, the pair was taken to Mahadevapura Police Station, where a case was registered for obstructing a public servant and assaulting a police officer. A medical examination confirmed both had consumed alcohol.
Officials emphasized their zero-tolerance policy against attacks on law enforcement and warned of strict legal consequences for offenders.
