Bengaluru: An elderly couple allegedly died by suicide after consuming poison at their residence in Manjunath Nagar in Bengaluru, with police suspecting that concerns over mounting medical expenses and becoming a financial burden on their two daughters may have driven them to take the extreme step.
The deceased have been identified as Eshwar Achari (73) and his wife Gowri (66).
Couple lived alone after daughters’ marriage
According to the police, the couple lived by themselves in their Manjunath Nagar home after marrying off their two daughters. Although the daughters stayed separately, they regularly visited their parents and took care of their needs.
Police said Gowri had been bedridden after losing movement in her hip and had been undergoing medical treatment, with the daughters bearing the expenses.
Health concerns believed to have led to tragedy
Preliminary investigations suggest that the couple believed they were placing an increasing financial burden on their daughters because of Gowri’s prolonged medical treatment.
Police suspect that the couple consumed poison at their residence on Wednesday night, allegedly deciding to end their lives together.
No suicide note has been reported so far, and investigators are continuing to examine all aspects of the case.
Daughter discovered parents on Thursday morning
The incident came to light on Thursday morning when one of the daughters arrived at the house after repeated phone calls to her parents went unanswered.
Upon entering the residence, she found both her parents dead and immediately alerted the police.
Personnel from the Basaveshwara Nagar Police Station reached the spot, conducted a preliminary inspection and shifted the bodies for post-mortem examination.
Investigation underway
Police have registered a case and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths. Further details are awaited as officials continue their inquiry.
