Bengaluru: A 70-year-old woman was allegedly murdered in her residence in the early hours of Thursday by a man who owed her Rs 8 lakh, even as her paralysed husband lay beside her on the same bed, unable to intervene.
Police identified the victim as Shobha and the accused as Shivakumar (33), a wholesale shop owner. Investigators said the crime was driven by debt and robbery, with the accused allegedly attempting to eliminate the financial liability by killing the lender and fleeing with gold jewellery from the house.
Crime unfolds in early hours
According to police, Shivakumar entered Shobha’s house around 1 am. Preliminary investigation suggests he was known to the victim and had access to the premises. Officers believe he attacked her while she was asleep, inflicting fatal injuries.
Her husband, who is bedridden and paralysed, was present in the same room at the time of the incident. Police said he was unable to raise an alarm or prevent the attack due to his medical condition. A video recorded at the scene later showed the woman lying in a pool of blood while the television continued playing in the background, underscoring the chilling circumstances of the crime.
After allegedly killing Shobha, the accused searched the house for cash and valuables. Police said he fled with nearly 450 grams of gold jewellery, estimated to be worth around Rs 65 lakh.
Attempt to evade suspicion
Investigators revealed that in an apparent bid to avoid suspicion, Shivakumar returned to the vicinity after the murder and mingled with neighbours and onlookers who had gathered near the house. Officials described this as a calculated attempt to divert attention and present himself as uninvolved in the crime.
However, CCTV footage from the Nelamangala area in Rural Bengaluru provided crucial leads. Police teams tracked the accused’s movements through surveillance cameras installed along key routes and identified him within hours of the crime.
He was apprehended later the same day. During the arrest, police seized a motorcycle allegedly used to travel to and from the crime scene, the knife suspected to have been used in the attack, and his mobile phone, which is being examined for further evidence.
Motive linked to debt and robbery
Police sources said Shivakumar had borrowed Rs 8 lakh from Shobha and was under pressure to repay the amount. Investigators believe the accused plotted the murder to avoid repayment and simultaneously steal valuables from the house.
Officers are probing whether the crime was premeditated and whether the accused had visited the house earlier to assess security arrangements. They are also verifying if he acted alone or had prior discussions with anyone regarding his financial distress.
The stolen jewellery is yet to be fully recovered, and efforts are on to trace any portion that may have been pledged or sold. Police said further investigation would establish whether the accused had prior criminal antecedents.
Safety concerns for elderly residents
The incident has once again raised concerns about the safety of elderly persons living in residential neighbourhoods, especially those without adequate security systems. With Shobha serving as the primary caregiver for her paralysed husband, the couple was considered particularly vulnerable.
Senior police officials have urged families to ensure basic safety measures, including installing CCTV cameras, limiting access to strangers, and verifying the background of individuals involved in financial dealings.
Community policing initiatives are also being discussed to create awareness among senior citizens about financial risks and personal safety.
The case highlights the growing need for vigilance in private lending arrangements and the risks associated with informal financial transactions. Police said the investigation is ongoing, and a detailed chargesheet will be filed after completion of forensic and digital analysis.
Authorities reiterated that swift action, aided by CCTV surveillance, led to the accused’s arrest within hours, preventing further evasion.
