India’s evolving relationship landscape is coming into sharper focus as digital platforms like Gleeden report a steady surge in users, indicating a quiet yet significant shift in how individuals perceive marriage, companionship, and emotional fulfilment.

The platform has crossed 4 million subscribers in India, pointing to a growing demand for discreet spaces where individuals seek connection beyond conventional relationships.

Changing attitudes towards relationships

A 2024 study by Gleeden involving over 1,500 married individuals across Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities revealed that more than 60 per cent of respondents are open to non-traditional relationship formats. These include practices such as open relationships and alternative companionship models, reflecting a gradual shift away from rigid norms.

The findings suggest that while marriage continues to hold cultural significance, personal expectations within relationships are evolving.

Digital platforms shaping private choices

Another global platform, Ashley Madison, has also reported similar trends. Interestingly, cities beyond major metros, including Kanchipuram, have emerged as unexpected hubs for such activity, highlighting the spread of this phenomenon across diverse regions.

Experts believe these platforms offer users a sense of anonymity and emotional validation, often sought during moments of routine fatigue or personal disconnect.

User behaviour and emerging patterns

Data indicates that 65 per cent of users are men, while women account for 35 per cent. However, female participation has seen a sharp 148 per cent increase over the past two years, pointing to greater agency and independence.

Most users are married or in long-term relationships, spending up to 1.5 hours daily on the platform. Peak activity times—afternoon and late night—suggest engagement during personal downtime.

Bengaluru leads with the highest share of users, followed by Hyderabad, Delhi, Mumbai, and Pune, while smaller cities are also witnessing a steady rise.

A deeper societal question

The growing popularity of such platforms raises important questions about modern relationships—whether this trend reflects empowerment and freedom of choice, or unmet emotional needs within marriages.

While societal norms continue to emphasise fidelity and traditional values, the data points to a parallel reality where individuals are redefining connection in their own ways.
