Fake cosmetics raise growing concern among Bengaluru consumers

Bengaluru: A growing concern over counterfeit and substandard cosmetics has emerged in Bengaluru, with consumers reportedly facing allergic reactions and other risks from products purchased through different retail channels.

The issue comes amid the Karnataka Drugs Control Department’s ongoing drive against fake and substandard cosmetics across the state.

Survey highlights consumer concerns

A recently released LocalCircles survey found that around 22 per cent of consumers reported experiencing allergic reactions to cosmetics purchased during the past three years.

The survey, which covered 4,300 respondents, also found that 30 per cent said they had purchased counterfeit or fake cosmetic products.

Consumers bought such products through several channels. Around 23 per cent purchased cosmetics from local stalls, while 21 per cent bought them through online platforms. Another 19 per cent purchased products from cosmetics and general stores, with the remaining respondents sourcing them from other places.

Authorities step up action

The findings come shortly after the Karnataka Drugs Control Department announced a citywide drive against fake and substandard cosmetics on August 9.

On August 10, officials raided 10 outlets in Bengaluru and seized products including lipsticks, serums and face creams. The seized items were sent for laboratory testing to determine whether they met required safety and quality standards.

Health Minister UT Khader warned that those putting public health at risk would not be spared.

Consumers urged to remain cautious

The survey findings and enforcement drive have drawn attention to the risks associated with purchasing cosmetics from unverified sources.

With cosmetics increasingly available through neighbourhood stalls, shopping centres, e-commerce and quick-commerce platforms, consumers may need to pay closer attention to product authenticity, packaging and reliable sources before making purchases.

The laboratory testing of the seized products is expected to provide further clarity on the extent of the problem.
