Bengaluru – A heated financial disagreement between relatives spiraled into a dangerous arson attempt in Viveknagar, Bengaluru, as a man allegedly tried to set a house on fire while family members were inside. The shocking incident, which unfolded around 5:30 PM on July 1, was caught on CCTV footage.
The targeted residence belongs to Venkataramani and her son Satish. As per the FIR filed, the accused has been identified as Subramani, a family member.
The origins of the dispute trace back nearly 7–8 years, when Parvati, a relative of the complainants, borrowed ₹5 lakh from Venkataramani for her daughter Mahalakshmi’s wedding. Despite several reminders, the amount remained unpaid. Tensions reignited recently at a family wedding, where Venkataramani once again asked Parvati for repayment, leading to heated exchanges and threats.
Soon after, on the day of the incident, Satish was at work in Domlur when his mother urgently called, informing him that she and her other son Mohan Das were at home when someone trespassed into their compound and poured petrol on the main door, shoe stand, and bedroom window, then set it ablaze.
Alert neighbors noticed the flames, quickly doused the fire, and ensured the residents were safe. Although no injuries occurred, property damage was reported to the front portion of the house.
CCTV footage clearly showed Subramani arriving with a petrol bottle, pouring it, and lighting a match. In his haste, he narrowly escaped being caught in the flames himself.
Police at Viveknagar Station have registered a case, and investigations are ongoing.
