Bengaluru: Finding an affordable rental home in Bengaluru has become more than just a financial challenge. For many tenants, the process now feels like a personal interview, with landlords asking detailed questions about their lifestyle, relationships and future plans before agreeing to rent out a property.
A Reddit post by a first-time renter has gone viral after the user described the experience as being “harder than a job interview”. While the tenant expected high rents and hefty security deposits, the extensive personal questioning came as an unexpected hurdle.
Landlords asking more than financial details
According to the post, landlords went far beyond asking about employment and income. The tenant claimed to have been questioned about marital status, future marriage plans, visits from parents, frequency of hosting friends, eating habits, alcohol consumption, smoking, work schedules and even daily routines.
The user was also reportedly asked to provide salary slips, a LinkedIn profile and references from previous landlords.
Summing up the experience humorously, the tenant wrote, “Can you also share your Class 10 marks card, blood group, and maybe a recommendation letter from your previous landlord?”
Reddit users share mixed experiences
The post sparked widespread discussion, with many users saying the experience depends largely on the landlord.
Some renters said they had lived in Bengaluru for years without facing such intrusive questioning, while others shared similar experiences, adding that detailed tenant screening has become increasingly common in both Bengaluru and Mumbai.
A few users, however, recalled positive experiences with considerate landlords who imposed only reasonable conditions and handled security deposits fairly.
Rising concerns over Bengaluru’s rental market
The discussion once again highlighted the challenges of renting in Bengaluru, where high monthly rents, security deposits of up to 10 months’ rent and additional charges continue to burden tenants.
Legal experts advise prospective renters to conduct their own due diligence by verifying property ownership documents, checking the landlord’s identity and ensuring the rental agreement clearly specifies rent, deposit, maintenance responsibilities and notice periods. Speaking to previous tenants, where possible, can also help avoid future disputes.
As Bengaluru’s rental market remains highly competitive, many tenants believe finding a suitable home now requires almost as much preparation as applying for a new job.
