City police have arrested five individuals, including three women, for allegedly barging into a house in Varthur and assaulting a young woman over suspicions of her involvement in illegal activities.

Group storms house, assaults woman

According to police, the incident occurred on the night of April 4, when the accused allegedly forced their way into the victim’s residence and attacked her, claiming they had caught her “red-handed.”

The accused have been identified as Fateh Dafedar, Seema Dafedar, Baban SK, Suknhar Khatun and Asura Khatun, all daily wage workers from West Bengal.

An investigating officer stated that a man was present in the house at the time of the incident but fled upon witnessing the assault.

Victim alleges harassment and prior threats

The victim, also a native of West Bengal, had moved to Bengaluru around four months ago in search of employment. She filed a complaint with the police on Sunday night following the incident.

In her statement, she alleged that associates of the accused had been following her for some time. She claimed to have warned them against such behaviour and had threatened to approach the police.

Authorities suspect that the assault may have been triggered by these warnings.

Police take swift action

Based on the complaint, police registered a case and arrested all five accused. Further investigation is underway to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

Officials have reiterated that taking the law into one’s own hands is a serious offence and urged citizens to report suspicions through legal channels instead of resorting to violence.

Concerns over vigilantism and safety

The case has raised concerns about vigilantism and the safety of individuals, particularly migrant workers in urban areas. Police emphasised the importance of due process and responsible behaviour within communities.

Authorities have assured that strict action will be taken against those involved, while also ensuring protection and support for the victim.
