Bengaluru: Food safety officials have flagged alleged unhygienic conditions at a Zepto warehouse operated by Nippon Express in Hoskote, Bengaluru Rural, during an inspection on Tuesday. The inspection raised concerns over the storage and handling of food products at the facility, where officials reportedly found food packets, soft drink cans and milk products kept haphazardly, along with garbage scattered across the floor.
The inspection is part of an intensified food safety enforcement drive being conducted by Karnataka’s Food Safety and Drug Administration Department across Bengaluru and surrounding areas.
Warehouse inspection raises hygiene concerns
Officials inspecting the Zepto warehouse in Hoskote reportedly observed conditions that raised questions about hygiene and food storage practices.
Visuals from the facility showed packets of food products lying around, while cans of soft drinks and milk products were reportedly kept in an untidy manner. Garbage was also seen strewn across portions of the floor.
Such conditions can raise concerns about the possibility of contamination, particularly in facilities where food and beverage products are stored before being dispatched to consumers.
The inspection is expected to help officials assess whether the warehouse is complying with prescribed food safety, hygiene, storage and handling requirements.
Food safety checks intensified
The inspection at the warehouse comes amid a wider food safety campaign across Bengaluru.
The Karnataka Food Safety and Drug Administration Department has recently increased inspections of hotels, restaurants, food preparation units and other food businesses. The campaign is aimed at checking whether operators are complying with the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and related regulations.
Officials have been examining food storage practices, hygiene conditions, labelling, food quality and handling procedures during the inspections.
The latest operation indicates that the enforcement drive is not limited to restaurants and hotels but also extends to facilities involved in storing and distributing food products.
Indira Canteen kitchens also inspected
As part of the same wider enforcement drive, officials conducted special inspections at three Indira Canteen kitchens in Bengaluru Urban district on Tuesday.
The kitchens inspected were located at Gottigere, Lingarajapuram and Singasandra. The inspections were carried out under the guidance of Health and Family Welfare Minister U T Khader.
Officials examined food quality, hygiene, safety, storage, labelling and handling practices at the kitchens and food preparation facilities.
Several violations were reportedly identified during the inspections, including alleged non-compliant labelling, misbranding and unhygienic food handling conditions.
Notices were issued to the food business operators concerned, while officials recommended that cases be filed before the respective authorities for further legal action.
Gottigere kitchen sealed
The Indira Canteen warehouse at Gottigere was sealed after officials reportedly found unhygienic food handling and storage conditions.
During the inspections, officials also collected samples of pulses, turmeric powder, cooking oil, jaggery, salt, sugar and other prepared food items.
The collected samples have been sent to designated laboratories for testing. The laboratory analysis is expected to determine whether the food products meet prescribed quality and safety standards.
Laboratory testing is an important part of food safety enforcement because visual inspection alone may not establish whether a food product complies with the required standards.
60 hotels inspected
The latest inspections form part of a broader enforcement operation covering Bengaluru Urban district and the Greater Bengaluru Area.
According to department officials, 60 three-star and five-star hotels in Bengaluru Urban district were inspected during the latest operation.
A total of 77 food samples were collected from the establishments and sent to designated food laboratories for analysis.
The inspections are being conducted to check compliance with the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and the Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations, 2011.
Officials have said that establishments found violating food safety requirements will face legal action.
Focus on safe food supply
The expanded inspection drive comes amid growing attention to hygiene and food safety standards at establishments serving or handling food.
Warehouses and distribution centres play an important role in the food supply chain because products may remain stored there before reaching consumers. Maintaining clean storage areas, preventing contamination and following appropriate handling practices are therefore essential.
The reported conditions at the Hoskote warehouse are likely to be examined by food safety authorities to determine whether there were violations of applicable regulations.
Similarly, the laboratory results from samples collected at the Indira Canteen kitchens and other establishments will help authorities determine whether the products meet prescribed standards.
Enforcement drive to continue
The Karnataka Food Safety and Drug Administration Department has indicated that the special inspection drives will continue across Bengaluru.
Officials have said strict legal action will be taken against food business operators found violating food safety regulations.
The inspections are intended to ensure that food supplied to the public is safe, wholesome and hygienically handled. With checks extending from hotels and canteens to food warehouses and distribution facilities, the department’s ongoing drive is placing greater scrutiny on different stages of the food supply chain.
