A private college professor in Bengaluru has filed a police complaint accusing a former student of stealing gold jewellery worth over ₹5 lakh from her residence in Banasawadi.
Entry gained on pretext of help
According to the complaint, the accused, identified as Elizabeth, visited the house of Dr Sheela Anthony on March 11, claiming to be her former student. She reportedly requested permission to use the restroom, following which she was allowed inside.
Suspicion leads to discovery
The professor said she grew suspicious soon after the woman entered the house. She noticed signs of disturbance, including an opened cupboard and a stool placed nearby.
On checking further, she allegedly found the accused attempting to take gold ornaments. Dr Anthony managed to recover her mangalya chain at the time but did not raise an alarm, citing concerns for her safety, and allowed the woman to leave.
Jewellery later found missing
In the following days, the accused reportedly returned to the locality multiple times, making inquiries about the professor. This raised further suspicion.
Upon rechecking her valuables, Dr Anthony found that a gold necklace with a ruby pendant, weighing around 45 grams, was missing. The jewellery is estimated to be worth over ₹5 lakh.
Police register case
A case has been registered at the Banasawadi police station under Section 305 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with theft in a dwelling house.
Police officials confirmed that an investigation is underway to trace the accused and recover the stolen items.
Safety concerns highlighted
The incident has raised concerns about allowing unknown or unverified individuals into homes, even if they claim familiar connections.
Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution and verify identities before granting access, especially in residential areas.
