Bengaluru: A Bengaluru-based actor and entrepreneur has alleged that his landlady asked him to vacate his rented home after demanding a 50% increase in rent and following his request for a formal rental agreement.
Vasant Marimuthu, founder and CEO of Teestra Lifestyle, shared his experience on social media platform X, claiming that the eviction came after he questioned the steep rent hike and sought proper documentation for the tenancy.
Founder alleges repeated rent hikes
According to Marimuthu, the landlady had increased the rent at every renewal, often by amounts higher than the commonly accepted annual revision.
He alleged that the latest demand sought a 50% increase in rent, which he found unreasonable. After requesting a written rental agreement, he claimed he was instead asked to vacate the property.
Sharing his ordeal online, Marimuthu criticised what he described as the growing trend of arbitrary rent hikes in Bengaluru, saying that “greed has no limit.”
Social media post sparks debate
His post quickly gained attention on social media, with many users sharing similar experiences of rising rents and disputes over tenancy agreements in the city. Others, however, noted that landlords are free to revise rents when lease terms expire, provided both parties agree to the new conditions.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over Bengaluru’s competitive rental market, where soaring housing demand has led to significant rent increases in several localities over the past few years.
