Kannada film star Yash, now recognised as one of India’s leading actors, began his journey with humble beginnings, determination and a dream to succeed in cinema. Known for his powerful screen presence and mass appeal, the actor’s rise from a modest background to pan-India stardom continues to inspire aspiring artists.
Born as Naveen Kumar Gowda on January 8, 1986, Yash grew up in a simple family. His father, Arun Kumar, worked as a bus driver with Karnataka Roadways and later Bangalore Metro Roadways, while his mother managed the household.
Despite modest circumstances, Yash developed a deep interest in acting from a young age.
Early career in theatre and television
Before entering films, Yash began his acting journey through theatre and television. These platforms helped him build confidence and gain valuable experience in the entertainment industry.
He appeared in popular Kannada television serials such as ‘Male Billu’ and ‘Preeti Illada Mele’, which helped him earn recognition among viewers. These early roles also provided him with the financial support needed to continue pursuing his passion for acting.
Arrived in Bengaluru with just ₹300
Yash’s determination to succeed is evident from the struggles he faced in the early days of his career.
In an interview, the actor revealed that he arrived in Bengaluru with just ₹300 in his pocket while chasing his dream of becoming an actor.
The young aspirant found the big city intimidating but remained determined to overcome challenges.
“I ran off from my home. When I came to Bengaluru, I was scared to be in such a big and intimidating city. But I was confident and wasn’t afraid of struggle,” he shared.
Yash also recalled that his parents had given him a clear condition: he could try his luck in acting, but if things did not work out, he would have to return and follow their wishes.
‘KGF’ turned him into a national star
Yash’s career reached new heights with the release of ‘KGF: Chapter 1’ and ‘KGF: Chapter 2’, directed by Prashanth Neel.
The first film became a major commercial success, earning around ₹238 crore worldwide, while the sequel went on to cross an impressive ₹1,200 crore globally, making it one of the biggest Indian blockbusters.
The films transformed Yash into a pan-India star, gaining him fans across languages and regions.
Big projects lined up
The actor now has several major projects in the pipeline. His upcoming film ‘Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown-Ups’, directed by Geetu Mohandas, is scheduled to release in theatres on June 4, 2026.
