In the bustling streets of Bengaluru, 33-year-old Jancy B V is not just navigating traffic—she is steering lives towards independence and dignity.
An auto driver, mother, and mentor, Jancy’s journey reflects resilience shaped by hardship and a determination to break cycles of struggle.
Childhood shaped by hardship
Growing up in Bannerghatta, Jancy faced early adversity after losing her father at the age of 12. With her mother working tirelessly in low-paying jobs, she witnessed the challenges of survival firsthand.
Financial constraints forced her to stop her education after Class 10, and by 16, she had begun working to support her family.
Early struggles and turning point
Jancy’s early years included working in a garment factory and later running a tea stall with her husband. Life was demanding, with limited income and constant pressure.
A turning point came when her husband encouraged her to learn auto driving. What began as a practical skill soon became a career.
“I realised I could earn on my own and support my family,” she said, recalling her first day’s earnings that boosted her confidence.
Finding freedom on the road
After obtaining a commercial licence in 2018, Jancy began taking rides and gradually built a steady income. Driving gave her something she had long missed—control over her time and independence.
Balancing long work hours with family responsibilities, she ensured her children’s education remained a priority.
Empowering other women
In 2021, Jancy began mentoring women who wanted to become financially independent. Since then, she has trained around 40–50 women, offering free driving lessons.
Her efforts have helped many women transition from low-income jobs to more stable and flexible livelihoods.
Driving change beyond herself
For Jancy, success lies not in earnings but in impact. Seeing other women gain confidence and financial stability is her greatest reward.
Her story stands as a powerful reminder that with opportunity and support, transformation is possible—not just for individuals, but for entire communities.
