Jayanagar 2nd Block, one of Bengaluru‘s well-known residential neighbourhoods, is facing an increasing garbage problem, with several street corners turning into dumping spots for household and construction waste.

Residents say areas along 7th Main Road and adjoining streets have witnessed a steady accumulation of garbage, affecting the locality’s cleanliness and appearance.

Residents blame irregular waste collection

Locals allege that door-to-door waste collection services are inconsistent, with collection vehicles visiting only once or twice a week in some areas.

Residents claim that sanitation workers often collect either dry or wet waste, leaving the remaining garbage behind. Some also alleged that collections are occasionally skipped altogether.

The situation has resulted in waste piling up at multiple locations across the neighbourhood.

Littering worsens the problem

Residents say indiscriminate dumping by motorists and passers-by has aggravated the issue.

According to locals, once a few garbage bags are discarded at a spot, others begin using the location as an informal dumping ground. Besides household waste, items such as old commodes, construction debris and waste from cowsheds have reportedly been dumped in nearby areas.

Efforts to discourage littering, including warning banners and the placement of religious images, have reportedly had limited success.

Authorities promise action

The locality now falls under the Bengaluru Central City Corporation and officials have acknowledged the issue.

Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Ltd (BSWML) Assistant General Manager Nataraj BR said efforts are underway to eliminate garbage blackspots in the area.

According to officials, similar drives conducted in Jayanagar 1st Block and Byrasandra recently helped clear several major dumping sites and received positive feedback from residents.
