Bengaluru: Senior sports physiotherapist and rehabilitation specialist Gopakumar P.T. has been selected for the ‘Guardian of Dignity’ honour at the Abhaya Bravery Award 2026 – Season 2, in recognition of his decades-long ethical physiotherapy service and unwavering commitment to empowering underprivileged girls and women through dignified, gender-sensitive healthcare.

The award will be presented on Friday, March 6, 2026, from 5 pm onwards at the Alliance Française de Bangalore Auditorium, Bengaluru. The Abhaya Bravery Awards are organised in association with the Bangalore Sports Lovers Association (BSLA) and Team Abhaya.

Rooted in values of responsibility and respect

Born and raised in Kerala in a middle-class family that strongly upheld honesty, discipline and respect for women, Gopakumar credits his parents—C C Sukumaran and Sathyabhama Sukumaran—for shaping his character and sense of responsibility. As the eldest sibling, alongside his brother Sreekumar and sister Sindhu, he learned accountability, leadership and the instinct to protect and support others from a young age.

Nearly three decades of ethical physiotherapy service

Gopakumar completed his graduation in Physiotherapy from a Government College of Physiotherapy in January 1997 and has been in continuous professional practice for 29 years. His career has been defined by extensive real-life clinical exposure, working closely with injured individuals, athletes, young girls, women, and people from underprivileged backgrounds.

He currently serves as a Senior Sports Physiotherapist and Rehabilitation Specialist and heads GK Hi-Tech Physiotherapy & Sports Rehabilitation Center under GK Future Innovations. His work focuses on ethical, evidence-based rehabilitation, injury prevention and long-term functional recovery, with a strong emphasis on providing a safe, respectful and dignified environment for girls and women, particularly those from economically and socially marginalised sections.

Standing for dignity, even in difficult circumstances

Gopakumar’s inspiration to work for society stems from his upbringing and professional journey. Years of clinical practice exposed him to the silent struggles of underprivileged girls—ranging from physical pain and lack of health awareness to fear, stigma and social limitations. His commitment to patient dignity, women’s safety and ethical care, even in challenging situations, strengthened his belief that true bravery lies in choosing what is right, regardless of difficulty.

Family, parenting and passing on values

He is married to Ranju Gopakumar, and the couple has two children—Akhil Gopakumar and Aditi Gopakumar. His son Akhil currently plays Under-14 KSFA league football for Sportzbase Academy, where he is training under a scholarship. Gopakumar began teaching him football skills from the age of three, guiding his sporting journey with discipline and balance.

His daughter Aditi has been encouraged to pursue music and is currently being groomed to become a professional singer, reflecting the family’s emphasis on nurturing talent with sensitivity and purpose.

Vision for empowering underprivileged girls

If given a wider platform through this honour, Gopakumar plans to focus on:

  • Health education and body-awareness programmes for underprivileged girls
  • Injury prevention initiatives and safe rehabilitation access
  • Training healthcare and sports professionals in gender-sensitive and ethical practices
  • Collaborating with schools, NGOs and community organisations to help girls grow confident, informed and fearless about their health and future

A true ‘Guardian of Dignity’

The ‘Guardian of Dignity’ honour celebrates Gopakumar P.T.’s lifelong dedication to ethical healthcare, women’s safety and compassionate service. His journey stands as a reminder that dignity, respect and courage form the foundation of true social impact.
