Bengaluru: Bengaluru Police have arrested two men for allegedly assaulting a government official deputed to supervise the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the city.
The accused have been identified as Dastagir (22) and Yarab (21). Police have launched further investigations into the incident.
Dispute broke out during electoral roll verification
According to the First Information Report (FIR), the incident occurred around 1.30 pm on Wednesday near Kausar Mosque on 18th Cross, Roshan Nagar, under the Pulakeshinagar area.
The complainant, Pakeerappa (37), a superintendent with the Karnataka Slum Development Board, had been deputed by the Pulakeshinagar Revenue Office to supervise booth-level officers conducting the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Ward No. 47.
While inspecting the ongoing verification process, Pakeerappa noticed two youths arguing with a booth-level officer over an SIR form.
Accused allegedly assaulted official
The booth-level officer reportedly informed the two men that they were residents of Jayanagar and not part of the local electoral constituency. They were allegedly asked to obtain the required form from their respective jurisdiction.
The argument soon escalated, and the two youths allegedly assaulted Pakeerappa while he was carrying out his official duties.
Following the complaint, Bengaluru Police registered a case and arrested both accused.
Investigation underway
Police said further investigation is in progress to ascertain the sequence of events and determine whether any additional offences were committed.
The incident comes amid the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise being carried out by election authorities to verify and update electoral rolls ahead of future elections.
