The Karnataka government has ordered a comprehensive inspection of all hospital buildings in Bengaluru following the deadly wall collapse at Bowringand Lady Curzon Hospital that claimed seven lives.
State orders citywide inspection
The directive comes after an eight-foot compound wall at the state-run hospital collapsed during intense rain, killing seven people, many of whom were street vendors who had taken shelter nearby.
Sharan Prakash Patil, Minister for Medical Education, said an inquiry led by the Public Works Department’s chief engineer is underway, with further action to follow based on the report.
Top leaders visit site
Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar visited the site soon after the incident.
The Chief Minister ordered the suspension of the executive engineer concerned and issued notices to other officials, including hospital authorities.
Focus on accountability and preparedness
The government also reviewed overall damage caused by the rains and discussed preparedness for the upcoming monsoon. Authorities have been instructed to inspect vulnerable structures and take preventive measures.
Siddaramaiah emphasised urgent steps such as de-silting stormwater drains, clearing debris, and pruning weak trees to reduce risks.
Widespread rain damage
The city witnessed heavy rainfall, strong winds, and hailstorms, leading to significant damage. Over 250 trees reportedly fell across Bengaluru, disrupting traffic and infrastructure.
Several areas experienced flooding, while strong winds caused structural damage in parts of the city.
Compensation and next steps
The government has already announced ₹5 lakh compensation for the families of those who died in the collapse.
A cabinet-level discussion is expected to further address the issue and outline long-term safety measures.
Renewed focus on urban safety
The incident has triggered renewed concern over infrastructure maintenance and public safety in Bengaluru, especially during extreme weather conditions.
Authorities said inspections and corrective measures will be prioritised as the city braces for more rain in the coming days.#BengaluruTragedy #Karnataka #PublicSafety #Infrastructure #MonsoonPrep #BreakingNews #newskarnataka
