The High Court in Bengaluru made a significant ruling on Monday by quashing a criminal defamation case against retired judge Michael Saldana of the Karnataka and Bombay High Courts. The case, registered by the trial court, was filed against MP Narona for remarks made during a press conference.

Saldana and others sought to have the case dismissed through an application presented at the High Court. Justice NS Sanjay Gowda led the bench that ultimately granted this request, citing Saldana’s unconditional apology and pledge to cease further legal action.

The background of the case involved statements made by Saldana during a media conference regarding alleged incidents involving Jesuit priests at St. Aloysius College, which reportedly resulted in property damage to Baptist D’Souza’s residence and allegations of police negligence leading to mistreatment of his daughters. Subsequently, lawyer Narona objected to these claims, alleging severe damage to his reputation as a result.

Following police inaction on his complaint, Narona filed a private complaint which prompted the trial court to order registration of a criminal case against Saldana and others. Despite prior submission of a B report by investigating officials, proceedings continued after legal challenges successfully contested these findings until its recent dismissal via today’s ruling from high court authorities.
