Bengaluru: New developments have emerged in a case involving Krishna J Rao, son of BJP leader Jagannivas Rao from Dakshina Kannada, who has been accused of cheating a young woman by promising marriage and later refusing after she became pregnant.
The case, which has attracted legal and public attention, is currently being heard in the Karnataka High Court, where the accused has sought to quash the proceedings against him.
Allegations span several years
According to the complaint, the accused and the woman were in a relationship for nearly seven years. During this time, he allegedly established a physical relationship with her on the promise of marriage.
The woman later became pregnant and gave birth to a child. The complaint states that the accused subsequently refused to marry her, leading to the registration of a case against him.
Defence cites consensual relationship
Appearing for the accused, senior advocate P P Hegde argued that the relationship between the two was consensual and based on mutual affection over several years.
He also contended that the case was being exaggerated due to political motivations, suggesting that attempts were being made to malign the image of the accused’s father.
Court raises key concerns
During the hearing, the bench headed by M Nagaprasanna raised several pertinent questions regarding the welfare of the woman and the child.
Observing that a child had been born from the relationship, the court remarked that marriage could be a viable option and that it would not be appropriate to leave the woman and child without support. The bench further noted that, as the biological father, the accused has a responsibility towards the child.
The court also questioned whether the accused would be willing to provide a monthly maintenance of ₹10,000 to the woman.
DNA report confirms paternity
In a significant development, a DNA test report received in September 2025 confirmed that Krishna J Rao is the biological father of the child. This finding has added weight to the case and is likely to influence the legal proceedings.
Earlier, the accused had been arrested in Mysuru and later released on bail. He is currently out on bail.
Next hearing scheduled
The High Court has directed the accused to file his response and has adjourned the hearing to April 24. The case is expected to see further developments in the coming days.
Conclusion
The case highlights complex legal and social issues surrounding relationships, responsibility, and alleged breach of promise. With the High Court seeking clarity on key aspects, including the welfare of the woman and child, the upcoming hearing is likely to be crucial in determining the direction of the case.
