Bengaluru Police have arrested Nikita Singhania, the estranged wife of 34-year-old techie Atul Subhash, following his tragic suicide on December 9. Subhash had left behind a video and a 24-page note accusing Singhania and her family of harassment and extortion. Police also arrested Singhania’s mother, Visha, and brother, Anurag, from Gurugram and Uttar Pradesh, respectively.
Arrests and Investigations:
The arrests were made after a detailed investigation revealed that Subhash was embroiled in a contentious legal battle with his wife over divorce and child custody. He claimed that Singhania and her family demanded ₹3 crore to withdraw legal cases and ₹30 lakh for visitation rights to see their son. This financial pressure, coupled with ongoing emotional distress, allegedly led to Subhash’s suicide.
The police have charged the family members with abetment to suicide, and they have been remanded in judicial custody. The family had filed anticipatory bail pleas in the Allahabad High Court to avoid arrest as the investigation progressed.
The Suicide Note and Video:
Atul Subhash’s heartbreaking 24-page note and 80-minute video shed light on the torment he suffered at the hands of his wife and her family. The note, which began with “justice is due,” detailed Subhash’s troubled marriage with Nikita, which started with high hopes but turned sour due to escalating financial demands. According to Subhash, the family pressured him to fund their business ventures, and when he refused, they filed false legal cases against him, including charges of dowry harassment and unnatural sex.
Growing Call for Legal Reforms:
The case has sparked widespread outrage, with many calling for stronger legal protections for men in similar marital situations. Legal experts have pointed out that men often find themselves vulnerable in such cases and have called for reforms to ensure a fairer and more balanced legal framework.
The tragic loss of Atul Subhash has highlighted the need for greater awareness and reforms to address the abuse of legal systems in marital disputes, ensuring protection for all individuals, regardless of gender.
