In a major boost to artificial intelligence-driven healthcare research in India, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, and Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), Hyderabad, have launched a collaborative initiative to develop advanced AI-based healthcare solutions.

The partnership aims to create intelligent tools that can assist in the early diagnosis, risk assessment and personalised treatment of serious health conditions, including cancer, kidney diseases, cardiovascular disorders and obesity.

First phase to focus on AI model development

The initial phase of the project is expected to be completed within six months. During this period, researchers from both institutions will analyse large clinical datasets, develop AI algorithms and build preliminary models that can support future healthcare applications.

According to officials, the initiative seeks to harness the power of artificial intelligence to improve medical decision-making and enable faster, more accurate diagnosis of diseases.

The researchers also aim to ensure that the AI systems are tailored to the unique health profiles, disease patterns and treatment requirements of Indian patients.

Advancing precision medicine in India

The collaboration builds on earlier discussions involving NIMS, the TANUH Foundation and IISc’s Artificial Intelligence Centre of Excellence in Healthcare.

These discussions focused on promoting multi-centre AI healthcare studies, precision medicine and translational research that can bridge the gap between laboratory innovations and clinical practice.

Experts believe that AI-powered healthcare solutions have the potential to transform patient care by enabling personalised treatment plans and supporting doctors with data-driven insights.

Strengthening digital healthcare ecosystem

The initiative is expected to accelerate the adoption of AI technologies across hospitals and healthcare institutions while strengthening India’s growing digital health ecosystem.

Officials said the project aligns with broader efforts to integrate emerging technologies into healthcare delivery and improve patient outcomes nationwide.

Earlier, NIMS partnered with IIT Hyderabad to launch the India Pathology Dataset project, a significant initiative aimed at expanding AI research capabilities in pathology and medical diagnostics.

The new collaboration with IISc is expected to further position India as a key player in AI-enabled healthcare innovation.
