Large parts of India are battling an intense heatwave, with temperatures ranging between 40°C and 46°C in many regions, while some cities recorded even higher levels.

According to weather reports, Akola in Maharashtra recorded the highest temperature at 46.9°C, followed by Amravati at 46.8°C. Cities such as Banda, Wardha, Barmer, Jaisalmer and Yavatmal also witnessed extreme heat nearing 46°C.

Schools shut as heat worsens

Authorities in several states have taken urgent steps to protect children.

In Dehradun, all schools and Anganwadi centres were ordered shut on April 27 due to severe heat conditions.

In Madhya Pradesh, schools up to Class 8 in cities including Bhopal, Indore, Gwalior and Ujjain have been closed until April 30. Senior classes are operating with reduced timings.

Bihar reports death linked to heat

In Bihar, temperatures crossed 40°C in at least 11 districts. A woman staff member at a private school in Arrah reportedly died due to extreme heat, raising concerns over public safety.

At Patna Zoo, officials installed coolers and air-conditioners to help animals cope with the soaring temperatures.

Heatwave to continue

Forecasts indicate that heatwave conditions are likely to persist on April 28 and 29 across Bihar, Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh.

Hot and humid weather is also expected in southern and coastal states including Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Odisha.

Rain brings slight relief

Some cities in Rajasthan, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh received sudden rain, bringing temporary relief.

The India Meteorological Department has also predicted heavy rain in Assam and Meghalaya, along with thunderstorms and hailstorms in Uttarakhand.

Nation urged to stay cautious

Citizens have been advised to avoid afternoon exposure, stay hydrated and take precautions, as India continues to face one of the season’s harshest heat spells.
