A 25-year-old man was rescued and provided timely medical assistance after Uttar Pradesh Police acted within eight minutes of receiving a suicide-risk alert triggered by an Instagram post.
The incident highlights the ongoing collaboration between Uttar Pradesh Police and Meta, which identifies potential self-harm content on social media platforms and alerts authorities for immediate intervention.
Social media post triggers emergency response
According to police, the man, a resident of the Sardhana area in Meerut, uploaded a video on Instagram on June 7 in which he appeared to consume a white-coloured liquid.
The post included an emotional message stating, “Ab tum khush rehna apni life mein” (Now you stay happy in your life), raising concerns about his safety.
Meta reportedly sent an alert to the Social Media Centre at Police Headquarters at 6.53 pm. Following instructions from senior officials, the information, including the man’s location and contact details, was immediately shared with Meerut Police.
Police reach home within minutes
Under the supervision of local police officials, a team quickly reached the man’s residence and found him in a critical condition. Officers also recovered a bottle containing a suspected liquid substance from the scene.
With the support of family members, the man was rushed to a hospital, where doctors stabilised his condition after treatment.
During counselling, he reportedly informed authorities that he had been experiencing emotional distress and depression following the end of a relationship.
Thousands of lives saved through initiative
Police said counselling and support were provided to both the man and his family after the incident.
According to Uttar Pradesh Police, its coordination mechanism with Meta, operational since 2022, has played a significant role in suicide prevention efforts. Between January 2023 and May 2026, alerts generated through Facebook and Instagram reportedly helped authorities save 3,011 lives across the state.
Officials said the initiative demonstrates how technology and rapid response systems can work together to support people in crisis and prevent tragedies.
