Markets across Bengaluru have turned shades of deep purple this monsoon as jamun arrives in abundance, bringing relief to fruit lovers and vendors alike. From KR Market and Jayanagar to Malleswaram, Shivajinagar, KR Pura and Varthur, the seasonal fruit has become one of the most visible attractions at markets and roadside stalls.
Traders say this year’s harvest has been significantly better than previous seasons, resulting in a sharp increase in supply across the city.
Bumper harvest boosts arrivals
According to wholesale traders, jamun arrivals at major markets have nearly doubled compared to recent years. The increase has been attributed to favourable weather conditions across Karnataka and steady supplies from neighbouring states.
Despite the higher arrivals, prices have remained largely stable. Depending on size and quality, wholesalers are selling jamun at Rs 20 to Rs 30 per quarter kilogram, while retail vendors are charging between Rs 25 and Rs 35.
Traders estimate that Bengaluru is currently receiving around three to four tonnes of jamun every day.
“Usually, jamun is available only for a short period. This year, however, arrivals have been much higher, and supply has exceeded daily demand,” said a trader at KR Market.
Weather played a key role
Experts from the Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR), Hesaraghatta, attributed the abundant yield to favourable climatic conditions.
According to scientists, a combination of warm and humid weather, along with relatively mild pre-monsoon showers, created ideal conditions for flowering and fruiting. Major production centres include Tumakuru, Kolar, Chikkaballapur and parts of Andhra Pradesh.
Researchers estimate that a mature jamun tree can yield between 100 and 125 kilograms of fruit over a period of 10 to 15 days.
Popular for health benefits
Apart from its unique sweet-tart taste, jamun continues to enjoy popularity due to its nutritional and medicinal value.
Nutrition experts note that the fruit has a low glycaemic index and contains fibre, vitamin C, iron and antioxidants. It is particularly favoured by people seeking to manage blood sugar levels naturally.
With supplies expected to remain strong for another week, consumers can continue to enjoy the seasonal fruit at affordable prices before the harvest gradually tapers off.
