A social media post by a Bengaluru-based law student alleging that his Muslim friend was denied a job interview because of his religion has sparked a heated online debate about discrimination and fairness in hiring practices.

Mohammed Ameen, a law intern working with a legal firm in Bengaluru, shared the allegation on LinkedIn, claiming that his friend was not rejected after an interview but was allegedly denied the opportunity to appear for one.

In his post, Ameen shared a screenshot of an alleged WhatsApp conversation in which a recruiter purportedly stated, “He is Muslim, so we are not interested.”

The post quickly gained attention on social media, with many users expressing concern over the alleged incident and discussing the broader issue of workplace discrimination.

However, neither the company nor the recruiter involved was identified, and the claims have not been independently verified.

Concerns over equality and inclusion

Ameen said the incident highlighted the gap between constitutional principles of equality and the experiences some individuals may face in real life.

He also noted that many people who believe they have faced discrimination may choose not to pursue legal remedies due to emotional stress, financial constraints or the fear of lengthy legal proceedings.

The law student clarified that his intention was not to attract attention but to encourage discussion about hiring practices and equal opportunity.

Mixed reactions online

The post drew varied responses from social media users. Some described the alleged incident as an example of deep-rooted prejudice and called for greater inclusivity in workplaces.

Others questioned the lack of verifiable evidence and urged the author to disclose more details about the recruiter and organisation involved before drawing conclusions.

While the allegations remain unverified, the discussion has once again brought attention to concerns surrounding workplace bias, equal opportunity and fair recruitment practices in India
