The ‘Justice for Abhaya’ initiative, born from the tragedy that shook the nation, aims to inspire change and foster a safer, more inclusive society.
A call to action from tragedy
Following the harrowing Abhaya incident that stirred national consciousness, Payel and Debmalya, a couple from Bangalore, decided to act. Their discussions with like-minded individuals led to the creation of the ‘Justice for Abhaya’ movement, focused on combating atrocities and fostering empowerment.

Building awareness and support
The movement has facilitated numerous meetings, brainstorming sessions, and awareness campaigns. It has also connected with individuals and organisations quietly working to support women survivors of cruelty and abandonment. Many compassionate men have also played vital roles in helping women reclaim their lives and integrate back into society with dignity.
Celebrating resilience and commitment
A special event on 7th March 2025, at Alliance Française, Vasanthnagar, Bangalore, will spotlight these efforts. Beginning at 9 am, the program will feature stories of resilience and the unyielding determination of those who overcame trauma to regain control over their lives. The event will also delve into the team’s relentless efforts to spread awareness and create tangible societal change.
Towards a tolerant and safe society
The initiative calls on citizens to join hands to create a society where respect, tolerance, and safety prevail. The goal is to ensure that people, irrespective of age or gender, can live without fear and freely express their thoughts.
