On Sunday, Bull Temple Road in Bengaluru buzzed with excitement as crowds gathered for the annual Kadalekai Parishe, or groundnut fair, which officially kicks off on Monday and lasts for five days. This vibrant celebration, a mix of tradition and modern attractions, is anticipated to draw hundreds of thousands of visitors from across the city and beyond.
Katte Satyanarayana, a former Basavanagudi corporator, reflected on the fair’s transformation over the years. “I’ve witnessed the changes growing up here. Initially, all goods came straight from farmers, but now the market is filled with ready-made products. Alongside the traditional groundnuts, you’ll find a variety of trendy items,” he shared.
This longstanding event, a core part of Basavanagudi’s cultural identity, is expected to attract between seven and eight lakh visitors this year. The Dodda Ganapati Temple, a central point of the celebrations, adds to the festive spirit, turning the area into a holiday-like environment.
However, Satyanarayana pointed out a decline in farmer involvement due to transportation issues. “Though we set up stalls for them, much of the produce now comes from the market instead,” he noted.
To ensure smooth operations, over 200 police officers, along with watchtowers and CCTV surveillance, are deployed. Traffic diversions and alternate routes are also set to ease local disruptions. Beyond the groundnut stalls, cultural programs at Bugle Rock Park and Narasimha Swamy Park on November 25 and 26 promise to enhance the festive atmosphere.
